Prospective graduate students:
I'm delighted that you're considering the Varney Lab! Our applications are due each December 1.
I welcome e-mail inquiries about opportunities. Please attach your CV, and include in the email a statement of why you find the work we do here interesting, and how it fits into your broader interests. Graduate school is a journey, and you will only have the tenacity to reach the end if you genuinely connect with the work you are doing. That means that if your email feels too generic, or doesn't seem to connect with the specific research in the lab, I might be less excited about you as a potential lab member. I will be particularly interested in applicants who have applied or plan on applying to external funding (e.g. the GRFP), and am happy to help with proposal development for students who would join the lab if funded.

Prospective postdocs:
Please attach your CV, and include your current job aspirations. My typical model is to allocate 10-20% of your time to your developing an independent research program, whether an expansion of the systems in the lab or on something new. If you come in with funding (e.g. PRFB), you are in control of 100% of your time. I fully support postdocs applying for jobs as early as their first Fall in the lab, and I commit fully to submitting letters of recommendation and helping with job packet/job talks as you progress if you are pre-academia. If you are pre-industry, I fully support your pursuit of internships that are relevant to your future work. I will be particularly interested in applicants who have applied for or plan on applying for external funding (e.g. the PRFB), and am happy to help with proposal development for postdocs who would join the lab if funded.
If you're on campus, come by so I can show you ostracods and aggressively ask you if you think they are cute!
